I am not getting the reason why snowline in southern slope of himalayas should be lower compared to the northern slope. With more vegetation on the southern slope, snowline should be pushed up. Can you please explain?
Climate is the predominant factor and vegetation is only an effect of climate (Climate determines the vegetation and not the other way around).
the southern slope has exposure to more solar irradiation than the northern slopes. So snowline must be at a higher altitude in southern slopes than north
In the Great Himalayan ranges, the snow line is at lower elevation on the southern slopes than on the northern slopes because the southern slopes are steeper and receive more precipitation as compared to the northern slopes. [You can say it is due to higher availability of moisture at the southern slopes compared to the northern slopes]
yes, this could be the reason. thank you.
see, western himalayas snowline is lesser because of lesser precipitation & eastern + kumaon himalayas snowline is higher ( lower latitude too helping a bit ) because of higher precipitation.
Upto this is fine.
But your next statement says, as southern slope is steeper and receives more precipitation, it has lesser snowline than the northern snowline in the Greater Himalayas.
Don’t you think both statements are contradictive !
Precipitation increases the snowline in eastern himalayas (acc. to 1st statement) and then, precipitation decreases snowline in greater himalayas (acc. to 2nd statement)
How’s that ? Please clarify my logical doubt. I know i missed some fundamental concept somewhere between the lines, but this is highly confusing sir.
Exactly I have same doubt as mentioned above
Both statement are contradictory
Pmf ias kindly elaborate
See…. western Himalayas are taller and steeper than N.E Himalayas and tall And steep slope blocks insolation which led the snow to stay longer….2nd reason is the latitude….. western Himalayas are having higher latitude compared to N.E HIMALAYAS which means lesser insolation and less heating of the surface area…..also the sun rises in the east and goes to west….but not in the north….all 3 factors are the reason why snowline is at lower elevation In western Himalayas
