  • Non-GMO means a product was produced without genetic engineering and its ingredients are not derived from GMOs.
  • Popcorn maize is a special type of maize whose kernels can pop when they are heated as they contain a small amount of moisture inside a hard outer covering.

  • Context (TH): Decades of improper industrial waste management have contaminated groundwater with chromium in parts of central Uttar Pradesh.
  • Chromium contamination is caused by buildup of toxic hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)].
  • Sources: Legacy dumping of “wet blue” chrome-tanning waste, chromite mining, chrome plating, stainless-steel welding, textile dyeing, and improper slag disposal.
  • WHO and Indian IS 10500 set the limit for total chromium in drinking water at 0.05 mg/L (50 ppb).
  • Impacts: Cr(VI) can cause lung/stomach cancer, liver and kidney damage, anaemia and skin lesions, while environmental contamination reduces soil fertility, photosynthesis and seed germination and can lead to bioaccumulation in aquatic food chains.
  • Remediation: Includes Bacillus/Pseudomonas bioremediation, hyperaccumulator plants such as mustard, ferrous-sulfate precipitation, reverse osmosis and ion-exchange filtration.

Chromium

  • Chromium is a hard, lustrous, corrosion-resistant transition metal, obtained exclusively from chromite ore (FeCr₂O₄); over 95% of India’s chromite reserves are in Odisha’s Sukinda Valley.
  • Global Status: South Africa is the largest producer, Zimbabwe has the largest reserves, while India ranks 4th in both production and reserves.
  • Chemical Forms: Occurs naturally as stable, nutrient-rich trivalent chromium (Cr(III)), but human and industrial activities transform it into toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)).
  • Applications: Used in electroplating, leather tanning, pigments and stainless steel; stainless steel requires at least 10.5% chromium for corrosion resistance.

  • It is commonly used to inspect areas that cannot be directly viewed by the human eye.
  • Endoscopes may be flexible, rigid or capsule-based. It also supports minimally invasive medical procedures.

  • Context (PIB): Central Govt has imposed restrictions on manufacture, sale and distribution of all FDCs containing Chlorpheniramine Maleate and Phenylephrine Hydrochloride, for use in children below 4 years.
  • A fixed-dose combination combines several active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in a specific ratio within a single pill or topical medication.
  • Every first-time drug combination is legally classified as a new drug and requires manufacturing approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) before domestic marketing.
  • DTAB is India’s highest statutory decision-making body on technical matters related to drugs. It advises Central and State Governments on technical matters arising from administrating Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940.
