- Over 4 Crore beneficiaries have been provided maternity benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) as of July 2025.
About PM Matru Vandana Yojana
- Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is a maternity benefit programme launched in 2017 as a centrally sponsored scheme.
- It forms a key component of the Government of India’s ‘Mission Shakti‘ for women’s empowerment.
- Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Women and Child Development.
- Target Beneficiaries:
- Pregnant women between 18 years 7 months to 55 years.
- First child (for PMMVY); Second child only if it is a girl (under PMMVY 2.0)
- Monitoring: Monitored at the national, state, district, block/project, and village levels using the newly developed PMMVY Software (PMMVYSoft).
- The scheme is aligned to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality).

Objectives of the Scheme
- Provide cash incentive to offset wage loss, ensuring rest before and after the first delivery.
- Improve health-seeking behaviour of pregnant & lactating women.
- Promote positive attitude towards the girl child via an incentive for the second girl child.
Mission Shakti
- ‘Mission Shakti’ was launched during the 15th Finance Commission period, 2021-22 to 2025-26.
- It is an integrated women empowerment programme launched as an umbrella scheme for the safety, security and empowerment of women for implementation.

Components
Sambal
- It is for the Safety and Security of Women.
- It consists of schemes of One Stop Centre (OSC), Women Helpline (WHL), and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP), with a new component of Nari Adalats—women’s collectives to promote and facilitate alternative dispute resolution and gender justice in society and within families.
Samarthya
- It is for the Empowerment of Women.
- It consists of the erstwhile schemes of Ujjwala, Swadhar Greh, and Working Women Hostel, which have been included with modifications.
- In addition, the existing National Creche Scheme for children of working mothers and PMMVY under the umbrella of ICDS have now been included in Samarthya.
- A new component of Gap Funding for Economic Empowerment has also been added to the Samarthya Scheme.
