- As of August 2025, PMAY-G has completed 2.82 crore houses, benefiting 2,68,480 landless families and generating 568 crore person-days of employment since 2016.
About Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY)
- The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a flagship housing scheme.
- It was launched in 2015 (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban) and 2016 (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin).
- Objective: To provide affordable housing to the urban and rural poor.
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G)
- Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Rural Development
- Objective: To provide pucca (permanent) houses with basic amenities to all houseless households and those living in kutcha (temporary) and dilapidated houses in rural areas.
- Eligibility:
- Minimum unit size: Each house must have at least 25 sq. m, including a dedicated hygienic cooking area.
- Quality construction: Beneficiaries use local materials and trained masons to build durable houses.
- Target Beneficiaries: It selects beneficiaries using housing deprivation parameters in the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC), 2011, which is to be verified by the Gram Sabhas.
- The scheme prioritises landless beneficiaries and mandates that a minimum of 60% of targets are earmarked for SC/ST households at the National level.
- Funding Pattern: Cost is shared between the Central and State governments in a 60:40 ratio for plain areas (90:10 for North Eastern and Himalayan states; 100% for UTs).
- Unit Assistance: Financial assistance of Rs. 1.20 lakh in plain areas and Rs. 1.30 lakh in hilly/difficult areas is provided for the construction of a house.
- Convergence with other Schemes: Under PMAY-G, it is mandatory to provide 90/95 person-days of unskilled wage employment at current rates to each beneficiary for the construction of their house, through convergence with MGNREGA.
- Beneficiaries receive Rs 12,000 for toilet construction through convergence with Swachh Bharat Mission–Gramin (SBM-G) or MGNREGA.
- Digital Monitoring: Managed through e-governance solutions like the AwaasSoft Management Information System (MIS) and the AwaasApp mobile application.
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U)
- Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
- Objective: To provide affordable housing to the urban poor, including slum dwellers.
- The Mission will be implemented as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) except for the component of the Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS), which will be implemented as a Central Sector Scheme.

Components of the scheme:
- Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC)
- Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP)
- Affordable Rental Housing (ARH)
- Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS)
- Eligibility:
- Families belonging to the EWS/LIG/MIG category.
- The applicant must not own a pucca house anywhere in India.
- For married couples, either or both can get a house jointly, subject to income limits.
- Houses under 21 sq.m can be expanded to 30 sq.m; if not feasible, a new house may be provided elsewhere under PMAY(U).
- Coverage: It covers all statutory towns notified in the Census 2011 and towns notified subsequently by State Governments.
- Funding Pattern: Cost is shared between the Central and State governments in a 90:10 ratio for North Eastern and Himalayan states; 100% for UTs; 60:40 for other states.
- Ownership of the house should be in the name of an adult female member or in the joint name.
- Convergence with other schemes: Smart Cities Mission, Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM-U 2.0), National Urban Livelihoods Mission, PM Vishwakarma, National Health Mission (NHM), PM SVANidhi, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, Ujjwala Yojana, etc.
- A dedicated Technology Innovation Sub-Mission (TISM) supports the use of green, disaster-resistant, and cost-effective technologies.
