Indian Army Day is celebrated annually on January 15 to honour the selfless service and valour of the soldiers of the Indian Army.
In 2026, India commemorates the 78th Indian Army Day, with the primary parade held in Jaipur, Rajasthan, marking the first time the event has been organised in a public area outside a cantonment to enhance public engagement.

About the Indian Army

The President of India serves as the Supreme Commander of the Indian Army under Article 53 of the Constitution.
The Army is managed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and headed by the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS).
Motto: Seva Paramo Dharma (Service Before Self).
Commands: The Army is divided into 6 Operational Commands and 1 Training Command (ARTRAC).

It is derived from the landmark transition of military command on January 15, 1949, under the provisions of the post-independence defence restructuring.
It commemorates the appointment of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa (then Lieutenant General) as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, succeeding General Sir Francis Roy Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief.

Significance of 1949: This event symbolised the complete “Indianization” of the country’s military leadership.
Field Marshal Cariappa: Known as “Kipper,” he was one of only two officers to hold the five-star rank of Field Marshal (the other being Sam Manekshaw). He adopted the motto “Service Before Self”.

It is officially declared by the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), as part of the force’s long-term modernisation roadmap.
Theme for 2026: “Year of Networking and Data Centricity”.
Objective: This theme follows the “Year of Technology Absorption” (2024-25). It focuses on treating data as a critical operational asset and integrating AI-enabled warfare, cyber resilience, and real-time decision-making systems.
