  • Green Revolution Phase (1965–1990): seeds, irrigation and fertilisers boosted rice-wheat production but caused monoculture and resource degradation.
  • Liberalisation Phase (Post-1991): Market reforms encouraged commercial crops, horticulture, exports, contract farming and diversification towards high-value agriculture.
  • Contemporary Phase: Climate-smart agriculture promotes diversification, millets, organic farming, precision technologies and sustainable, resource-efficient crop production.

Major Changes in India’s Cropping Pattern

  • Cropping Intensity: Increased from 111% (1950–51) to 155.9% (2024–25) through irrigation, HYV seeds and multiple cropping.

  • Climate-Smart Farming: Promote 1,622 ICAR climate-resilient crop varieties (2014–22) alongside AI-based advisories, weather forecasting and precision agriculture.
