  • Growth Rank: India surpassed the United States in 2025 by adding 37 GW of solar capacity and became the world’s second-largest solar growth market.
  • Capacity Expansion: It accelerated total capacity from 100 GW to 150 GW in 14 months, scaling from 3 GW in 2014 to 162.15 GW by June 2026.
  • Production Rank: India overtook Japan to become the world’s third-largest solar power producer, generating more than 108,000 GWh of solar electricity.

{Prelims – Awards} Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak

  • Context (PIB): Union Minister conferred the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak on 12 rat miners for their exceptional courage and selfless service during the Silkyara Tunnel Rescue Operation (Uttarakhand).
  • Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak is India’s highest civilian life-saving award. It is one of the three Jeevan Raksha Padak awards.

About Jeevan Raksha Padak Awards

  • Instituted: 1961. Objective: To honour individuals for saving the life of another person through acts of exceptional courage and humanity.
  • Given for meritorious act of human nature in saving the life of a person in cases like drowning in water, accidents, fire incidents, electrocution, natural calamities, rescue operation in mines etc.
  • Categories: Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Jeevan Raksha Padak
  • Eligibility: Open to persons of either sex from all walks of life and it can be awarded posthumously.
  • Selection Process: Recommendations are considered by the Awards Committee within two calendar years from the date of the life-saving act.

{Prelims – Geo} Ancient Disaster in Neptune’s Moons

  • Context (DDN): James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations suggest that Neptune’s inner moons and rings contain remnants of ancient satellite destruction.
  • JWST detected magnesium-rich phyllosilicates on two small inner moons (Larissa and Galatea) and within Neptune’s rings, indicating extensive aqueous alteration.
  • These moons lack size and heat for such changes, implying they came from Neptune’s original satellite system, which was destroyed after capturing Triton.
  • Triton’s retrograde orbit (opposite to Neptune’s rotation) suggests it originated in the Kuiper Belt and was gravitationally captured by Neptune.

About Neptune

  • Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun and is classified as an “Ice Giant” (like Uranus).
  • It has 16 known moons, with Triton as the largest. Its atmosphere contains hydrogen, helium, and methane, which absorb red wavelengths, giving it a blue appearance.
  • Great Dark Spot: A high-pressure storm on Neptune, first discovered by NASA’s Voyager 2 in 1989.

  • Context (PIB): Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances released its 50th Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) report featuring the GRAI for June 2026.
  • GRAI is a periodic evaluation framework launched by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) in India.
  • It ranks central ministries and departments based on how efficiently and timely they resolve public complaints submitted via CPGRAMS.
  • GRAI evaluates organizations using 11 key indicators spread across four main dimensions:
    1. Efficiency: Time taken to dispose of and clear pending grievances.
    2. Feedback: Citizen satisfaction levels and feedback quality.

  • BTTF is an umbrella body comprising 11 leading textile Export Promotion Councils (EPCs) and Industry Associations of India.

  • Context (PIB): Lok Sabha Speaker paid floral tributes to Dr. G. S. Dhillon, former Speaker, Lok Sabha, in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, on his birth anniversary.
  • Gurdial Singh Dhillon was a distinguished parliamentarian, freedom fighter, journalist, scholar, and former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, who actively participated in the Freedom Movement and Kisan Movement.
  • Served in the Punjab Legislative Assembly (1952–67), was elected to the 4th Lok Sabha (1967), and served as Speaker of the 4th (1969–71) and 5th Lok Sabha (1971–75). He also held key positions in journalism, including Chief Editor of Sher-e-Bharat, and was awarded Tamra Patra for his contribution to the freedom struggle.

{Prelims – S&T} Nanobots for Breast Cancer Therapy

  • Context (PIB): Researchers from the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST) in Mohali and BARC in Mumbai developed light-driven nanobots for targeted breast cancer therapy.
  • The nanobots use upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) coated with polydopamine for multifunctional, light-responsive behavior and are functionalized with folic acid to specifically target breast cancer cells.
  • Unlike UV- or visible-light nanobots, the new model uses near-infrared (NIR) light, allowing deeper tissue penetration with reduced tissue damage.
  • Significance: It can address major limitations of current treatments, offering a potentially precise and minimally invasive approach for deep-seated tumors.
  • UCNPs are microscopic materials that absorb low-energy light and convert it into higher-energy light or heat to activate targeted treatments deep inside human tissue.
  • Polydopamine is a biocompatible synthetic polymer that absorbs near-infrared light and converts it into heat, which moves the nanobot and helps destroy targeted cancer cells.

  • Context (IE): An Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) team discovered the first symbiotic X-ray binary star system in the Magellanic Bridge through the eROSITA telescope.
  • Magellanic Bridge is a stream of gas and stars linking two of the Milky Way’s nearest satellite dwarf galaxies: Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC).
  • It formed ~200 million years ago due to tidal forces during an encounter between the LMC and SMC.
  • Significance: The Magellanic Bridge helps astronomers examine how interaction between galaxies influences stellar formation and evolution.
  • X-ray binaries are binary stars that emit X-rays, produced by matter falling from a donor star (usually a main-sequence star) to an accretor (neutron star or black hole).
  • A binary star is a system of two gravitationally bound stars orbiting a common centre of mass.

{Prelims – S&T} Ghost Particles or Neutrinos *

  • Context (TH): A study reported the first measurement of signature of particles called neutrinos emitted by spent nuclear fuel, which a detector can detect even from a distance.
  • Scientists can detect weak neutrinos even after a nuclear reactor is shut down because radioactive fuel keeps decaying. This helps monitor spent fuel and detect if fuel is secretly removed to make nuclear weapons.

About Neutrinos

  • Nature: Subatomic particles; interact so weakly with matter that around 100 billion neutrinos pass through one’s fingers every second without detection hence they are often called the ghost particles.
    • Almost massless particles with no electric charge, can travel from their sources to Earth with essentially no attenuation and no deflection by magnetic fields.
  • Production: Produced during nuclear reactions, including those that take place in the core of the sun.
  • Detection: IceCube, the South Pole neutrino observatory, is the first gigaton neutrino detector ever built.
    • Cubic-kilometer particle detector made of Antarctic ice and located near Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.

{Prelims – Social Sector} Gut Microbiome Diversity

  • Context (IE): A study by BRIC–NCCS, Pune, found 14 new bacterial species and about 200 local gut microbial strains in the microbiomes of eight Indian tribal groups.
  • The gut microbiome comprises bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microbes that support digestion, immunity, intestinal protection and pathogen control.
  • Key Findings:
    • The eight tribal communities across four biogeographic regions shared three core bacterial groups: Segatella, Agathobacter and Faecalibacterium
    • Four dairy-consuming Trans-Himalayan communities showed greater gut bacterial diversity and higher levels of Bifidobacterium.
  • Implication: The findings challenge a universal “healthy” gut microbiome model as composition varies by geography, diet, and community environment.
  • Significance: It emphasizes the need for an India-specific microbiome database to support precision probiotics, reinforcing the Indian Human Microbiome Initiative.

{Prelims – Sports} Commonwealth Games

  • Context (NDTV): India was awarded the hosting rights for the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Ahmedabad, making it Asia’s first repeat host nation.
  • First held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada, as the “British Empire Games,” it is an international multi-sport event held every four years.
  • Governing Body: Commonwealth Sport, formerly the Commonwealth Games Federation, oversees the Games. Headquarters: London.
  • Participation: 74 Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs), including independent Commonwealth members and associated territories, take part.
    • India debuted at the 2nd edition in 1934 (London) and first hosted the CWG in Delhi in 2010.
  • Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 independent and equal countries across Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific, including India. It traces its roots to the 1926 Balfour Declaration and was formally established by the 1949 London Declaration.
