Evolution of Cropping Pattern in India

  • Pre-Green Revolution (Before 1965): Rain-fed, subsistence agriculture dominated with traditional seeds, coarse cereals, pulses, and low agricultural productivity nationwide.
  • Green Revolution Phase (1965–1990): seeds, irrigation and fertilisers boosted rice-wheat production but caused monoculture and resource degradation.
  • Liberalisation Phase (Post-1991): Market reforms encouraged commercial crops, horticulture, exports, contract farming and diversification towards high-value agriculture.
  • Contemporary Phase: Climate-smart agriculture promotes diversification, millets, organic farming, precision technologies and sustainable, resource-efficient crop production.

Major Changes in India’s Cropping Pattern
