{GS3 – Envi } Biogas for India’s Energy Security **
- Context (TH): India’s energy needs remains vulnerable to global energy shocks and requires support and incentives to boost alternative fuels including Biogas.
Biogas
- Biogas is a mixture of methane, CO2 and small quantities of other gases produced by anaerobic digestion (absence of oxygen) of organic matter.
- Alternative Fuel: It is chemically identical to CNG; renewable, carbon-neutral, can be produced from waste, and be used directly to produce electricity.
- Reduce Import Dependency: India imports nearly 85% of its crude oil needs, much of it from West Asia, and supplies faced disruptions due to the Israel-U.S.-Iran war.
- Promote Circular Economy: By turning these organic wastes into biogas, wastes are reutilized for electricity, heating, and cooking use promoting circular economy.
- Boost Rural Economy: Serves as an additional revenue source for farmers; boost entrepreneurship, rural economy and employment.
- Financial Barriers: High initial capital fund including construction, labour and equipment cost of installing a biogas plant are relatively high for rural households.
- Market Barrier: Biogas faces great competition with other cheaper alternatives from rural areas like traditional solid biomass, firewood, and cow dung, generally available for cooking applications.
- Unavailability of Quality Feedstock: Most CBG plants receive poorly segregated waste and since most plants lack technology to process mixed source feedstock, CBG producers incur additional cost for waste segregation.
- Regulatory Barriers: Lack of coordination among multiple agencies for incentives causes poor performance and low absorbing of the biogas technology.
- Technical Barriers: Limited supply of water and raw materials including under-feeding of inputs or feeding in wrong ratios deteriorate the performance of biogas plant.
Government Initiatives Promoting Biogas
- Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan (GOBARdhan): Covers schemes/programmes/policies for conversion of organic waste like cattle dung/ Agri-residue etc. to biogas/ CBG/ Bio CNG.
- Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT): Launched in 2018 by Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to promote the increased use of biofuels including CBG.
- Biogas Programme: By Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) under National Bioenergy Programme (2021–26), to promote clean and sustainable energy solutions at the grassroots.
- National Biofuels Policy 2018: Active promotion of advanced biofuels, including CBG.
- Replicating Successful Models:
- Zakariyapura Model featuring integrated household-level biogas units.
- Varanasi Model for centralized large-scale biogas production for captive use in a dairy plant.
- Banas Model is a centralized large-scale plant focused on converting biogas into CBG.

- Context (PIB): World Youth Skills Day 2026 was celebrated on 15 July 2026 with the theme “Skills for a Shared Future“, marking the 11th anniversary of the Skill India Mission.
India’s Current Skill Landscape
- Demographic Window: With 54% of its population under 25 and 62% in the working-age group, India’s demographic advantage lasts until 2040.
- Employability Rise: Workforce employability rose from 46% in 2020 to 56.35% in 2026, supporting the national target of 100% skilled labour employability by 2047.
- Training Deficit: Only 4.1% of the workforce receives formal vocational training (PLFS 2023-24), while just 4.9% of youth aged 15-29 are formally skilled (Economic Survey 2024-25).
- AI Preparedness: India accounts for 16% of the global AI talent pool and scores 49.3 on the IMF AI Preparedness Index, above the 42.1 average for emerging economies.
- Talent Projection: A projected 45 million skilled-professional surplus in India will cushion against an 85 million global worker shortage by 2030.
- Gender Shift: Women’s employability reached 54%, overtaking men’s for the first time in five years, while men’s job readiness stood at 51.5% (India Skills Report 2026).
- Vocational Premium: A 93% boom in technical blue-collar trades has triggered a “labour flip“, in which specialised vocational skills out-earn those with entry-level corporate degrees.
Challenges with India’s Skill Development
- Credential Paradox: A 17% unemployment rate among certified workers, compared with 4% among informally trained workers, undermines the credibility of formal qualifications.
- Stipend Deficit: Apprenticeship applications plunged from 42.8 lakh to 4 lakh in 2025, as low stipends were outweighed by the immediate earnings from gig work.
- Quality Dilution: Expanding sub-six-month vocational courses to 44% of total training dilutes instructional depth and artificially inflates certification targets.
- Capacity Wastage: Low enrolment of 13.3 lakh students against 23 lakh sanctioned seats leaves nearly half of India’s formal training infrastructure unused.
- Fiscal Shortfall: A budgetary allocation of only 3% of total education spending starves industrial institutions of advanced laboratory and machinery upgrades.
- Trainer Vacancies: Vacancies in one-third of institutional training posts compromise the technical quality of teaching across baseline vocational education networks.

{GS3 – IE} Decarbonisation of India’s Iron and Steel Sector **
- Context (DTE): Union government issued a draft notification to bring the iron and steel sector under the compliance mechanism of the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS).
- It mandates binding GHG emission-intensity targets for 255 major steel plants from FY 2026-27, requiring reductions of 2.1% to 9.3%, with a median of ~5.5%.
About Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS)
- CCTS was established under the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Act, 2022, to formally build and govern the Indian Carbon Market (ICM).
- It operates a dual-market system: entities below emission targets earn tradable Carbon Credit Certificates (CCCs), while those exceeding targets must purchase them. Non-obligated entities can generate and sell certificates through voluntary projects.
- One CCC represents 1 tonne of CO2 equivalent reduced or removed from the baseline.

Significance of Steel Sector Compliance under CCTS
- Emission Reduction: India’s steel sector emits 2.54 tCO₂ per tonne, exceeding the global average (1.9 tonnes), and accounts for 10-12% of national CO₂ emissions. Reducing this is key for Net Zero 2070.
- Regulatory Shift: Including the sector under CCTS shifts focus from improving energy efficiency, under the old PAT scheme, to directly capping and pricing GHG emission intensity.
- Export Competitiveness: Lower steel emission intensity can reduce Indian exporters’ exposure to the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.
- Incentivising Cleaner Technologies: Certificate trading rewards renewable energy, scrap recycling and Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF), while increasing compliance costs for inefficient plants.
Challenges to Decarbonising the Iron and Steel Sector
- Carbon Lock-in: India has approximately 258 MTPA of steel capacity under development, with over 90% of it using coal-based production routes for the next 20-30 years.
- Scrap Constraint: India’s fragmented, supply-constrained scrap market limits EAF expansion and perpetuates dependence on primary ironmaking.
- Process Rigidity: Replacing coking coal with capital-intensive green hydrogen-based DRI and CCUS is constrained by India’s low R&D expenditure at 0.64% of GDP.
- Technology Regression: Data show that the coal-dependent Induction Furnace route has increased to 35.4% of production, while the cleaner EAF share has fallen to 21.9%.
- Limited Ambition: Initial CCTS targets call for about 2% annual reductions for some producers, promoting incremental efficiency gains over structural technology shifts.

{GS3 – IS} Guardians of India’s Maritime Frontiers
- Context (PIB): Nilgiri, Sandhayak and Arnala classes reflect the steady evolution of India’s naval capability.
- Together, they enhance maritime security, support the Blue Economy and reinforce India’s position as a leading maritime power. They also advance the SAGAR and MAHASAGAR visions through stronger maritime security and regional cooperation.
- The Indian Navy is a primary security provider in the Indian Ocean Region. It safeguards a coastline of about 11,098 kilometres, an Exclusive Economic Zone of nearly 2.4 million square kilometres, and sea lanes carrying close to 90 per cent of India’s trade by volume.

Surface Combat Capability – Stealth Frigates
- Stealth frigates form the backbone of the Indian Navy’s surface combat capability. They protect aircraft carriers, secure vital sea lanes and project power across distant waters.
- Designed for modern naval warfare, they integrate advanced weapons, sensors, and aviation facilities while optimizing radar, infrared (thermal), and acoustic signatures for enhanced stealth. This makes them difficult to detect while enabling both offensive and defensive operations.
How Stealth Technology Works on Frigates?
- Stealth technology makes a warship harder for the enemy to detect. It does not make the ship invisible rather it simply makes the ship appear much smaller and quieter than it really is. Warships achieve this in a few key ways. Their angled surfaces deflect enemy radar waves away, while special coatings absorb radar signals instead of reflecting them.

Project 17A
- Project 17A is the Indian Navy’s advanced stealth frigate programme to build seven next-generation guided-missile warships. These frigates are designed for multi-mission operations, including anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare.
- The Nilgiri-class comprises INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri, INS Taragiri, INS Udaygiri, INS Dunagiri, INS Mahendragiri and the under construction Vindhyagiri.
Key Specifications
- Propulsion: A Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system with a maximum speed of 28 knots (A knot is about 1.85 kilometres per hour). Indigenous Content: 75%.
- Strike Power: Supersonic surface-to-surface missiles that hit distant ships and shore targets.
- Combat Capability: Equipped with BrahMos missiles, medium-range air defence missiles, CIWS, advanced radar, hull-mounted sonar, and helicopters.
- Apart from Project 17A frigates, Indian Navy also has two more classes of stealth vessels, namely: Talwar-class and the Shivalik-class.

Hydrography – Sandhayak-class Survey Vessels
- Survey vessels strengthen Indian Navy’s hydrographic capability by mapping the seabed & coastal waters. These ships regularly undertake humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and search and rescue missions.
- The Indian Navy is inducting the indigenous Sandhayak-class survey vessels. The class comprises INS Sandhayak, INS Nirdeshak, INS Ikshak and INS Sanshodhak.
Key Specifications of Sandhayak-class Survey Vessels
- Capable of a top speed of over 18 knots & an operational range of 6,500 nautical miles.
- It can operate helicopters and serve as a hospital ship in an emergency. Indigenous Content: 80%.
- The 21st of June is celebrated worldwide as World Hydrography Day. INS Sanshodhak, India’s newest survey ship, was commissioned on that very day.

Coastal Anti-Submarine Warfare – Arnala Class
- Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft strengthen the Indian Navy’s coastal defence capability.
- To reinforce this crucial layer of maritime security, the Indian Navy is inducting the indigenous Arnala class craft. The eight-ship class comprises Arnala, Androth, Anjadip, Amini, Abhay, Agray, Akshay and Ajay.
Key Specifications of Arnala-Class Crafts
- Waterjets that drive the craft with a jet of water instead of a propeller, giving agility in shallow waters.
- Speed: ~25 knots. Equipped with lightweight torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets, shallow-water sonar, and an integrated combat management system.

- Context (TH): Bonalu festival began at Sri Jagadamba Mahankali Temple located within Golconda Fort in Hyderabad.
- Bonalu is Telangana’s annual Hindu state festival, celebrated as a thanksgiving to Goddess Mahakali for protection and the fulfilment of vows.
- Originating during the Kakatiya dynasty and Qutb Shahi periods, it took its current form in 1813 when a plague struck the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
{Prelims – Envi} Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB)
- Context (DTE): A study suggests that Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB) could weaken the intensity of a Super El Niño and reduce its associated global climate impacts.
- The study found that it can disrupts the Bjerknes feedback, the positive interaction between tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures and trade winds that strengthens El Niño.
- MCB is a Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) or solar geoengineering technique. It involves spraying microscopic seawater droplets into the atmosphere over oceans. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind sea salt aerosols, which act as Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN).
- This increases the number of cloud droplets, making marine clouds brighter and more reflective (higher albedo), thereby reflecting more sunlight back into space and cooling the ocean surface.

- Context (DTE): Heat waves pushed 57 million hectares of tropical forests beyond photosynthesis limits: Study.
Key Highlights
- Declining Forest Resilience: Rising temperatures are pushing tropical forests beyond critical photosynthesis thresholds, weakening plant growth, increasing tree mortality, and reducing their capacity as a carbon sink.
- Future Risks: The area exposed to critical heat could exceed 93 million ha by 2050 and 160 million ha by 2100, accelerating global warming, droughts, extreme weather events, and biodiversity loss.
{Prelims – Envi} Warming in Jammu and Kashmir
- Context (DTE): Indian researchers recently published a study analysing 45 years of temperature observations (1980–2024) from ten IMD stations across Jammu and Kashmir.
Key Findings
- Rate of Warming: High-altitude tourist spots such as Pahalgam and Gulmarg have seen a nearly 1°C rise in temperature over the past two decades.
- Elevation-Dependent Warming (EDW): Mid- and high-altitude stations warmed faster than low-altitude plains like Jammu, mainly driven by surface-albedo feedback.
- Seasonal Trend: High-elevation stations recorded the strongest daytime warming during winter.
- Night Warming: Minimum temperatures are rising faster than daytime temperatures at several mountain stations, increasing by 0.1°C–0.5°C per decade due to heat trapping by atmospheric moisture.
- Surface-Albedo Feedback is a climate cycle in which warming melts reflective snow cover, exposing darker ground that absorbs more heat, leading to further local warming.

{Prelims – Envi} Solitary Bee Species
- Context (TH): Researchers discovered two new solitary bee species, Elaphropoda triangulata and Habropoda adi, in the Siang Valley, Arunachal Pradesh.
- E. triangulata was named for the triangle-shaped markings on its abdomen, and H. adi in honour of the local Adi indigenous community.
- Both species belong to the ground-nesting solitary bee subfamily Anthophorinae. Despite their solitary nature, these bees are highly specialised and vital pollinators that support both forest ecosystems and agricultural productivity.

- Context (TH): Andhra Pradesh has signed a MoU with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) to promote inclusive and sustainable urban development in the State.
- It aims to set up a Centre of Excellence for Urban Affairs in Amaravati as part of the State’s SURGE AP, RISE AP and UPLIFT AP initiatives.
About UN-Habitat
- The UN-Habitat is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities.
- It was established in 1978, following the 1st UN Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat I) held in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976. Headquarters: Nairobi, Kenya.
- Governing Body: UN-Habitat Assembly, comprising all 193 UN Member States, meets every four years.

- Context (DTE): United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) released the Lives, Choices and Futures – Demographic Futures Survey 2026.
Key Highlights
- India’s young people remain optimistic about the future; however, they are concerned about growing uncertainties.
- A widening gap exists between aspirations and reality, as many young people are unable to achieve their desired family size due to financial and social constraints.
- India’s demographic dividend will depend not only on its young population but also on sustained investments in education, healthcare, decent employment, social protection, and gender equality.
- Realising India’s demographic potential requires a “gender dividend“, where every young woman has equal rights, choices, and opportunities to participate fully in shaping her future and contributing to the country’s development.
{Prelims – S&T} Sugar Erythrulose
- Context (TOI): Astronomers detected erythrulose, a four-carbon ketose (simplest sugar type), in the molecular cloud G+0.693−0.027 near the centre of the Milky Way.
- This is the first confirmed “true sugar” (a monosaccharide with atleast three carbon atoms) detected in the interstellar medium.
- Quantum simulations indicate the sugar forms efficiently on icy interstellar dust grains via reactions between two-carbon aldehydes and alcohols.
- Discovering a true four-carbon sugar in space suggests that complex chemical components necessary for life can form before stars or planets exist.
- Erythrulose is a chiral monosaccharide (C₄H₈O₄) found in ripening fruits like red raspberries and used in self-tanning lotions.
