  3. Meandering of Gandak River formed Kanwar Lake.
How many of the statements given above are correct?
  1. Only one
  2. Only two

Explanation

Statement 1 is correct
  • Jhelum originates from a spring at Verinag in J&K, located at the foot of the Pir Panjal Range. It is called Vyeth in Kashmiri, Vetesta in Sanskrit, and Hydaspes in Greek. It is the main waterway of the Kashmir Valley, which flows through Srinagar and Wular Lake. This transboundary river joins the Chenab near Jhang in Pakistan.
  • Major tributaries: Liddar, Dudhganga and Sindh.
  • Important cities: Srinagar, Baramulla and Uri.

Statement 2 is incorrect
  • Kolleru Lake was previously a lagoon, but now it is several kilometres inland due to the coastline of emergence and delta formation. The lake is fed directly by the seasonal Budameru and Tammileru streams and is connected to the Krishna and Godavari systems via several inflowing drains and channels (not directly fed by the Krishna River). It was declared a Ramsar site in 2002 for its ecological importance.
Statement 3 is incorrect
  • Kanwar Lake, also known as Kabartal locally, is located in Bihar’s Begusarai district. It is a residual oxbow lake & Asia’s largest freshwater oxbow lake.
  • It is formed due to the meandering of the Burhi Gandak River, a tributary of Ganga. It is a rainfed lake, according to waterbody experts and fills up during the monsoon season. Challenges faced by Kanwar Lake: Increasing silt accumulation, deforestation, and land disputes.

Additional Information: Gandak River

  • Originates near the Tibet-Nepal border at a height of 7,620 m
  • It receives a large number of tributaries in Nepal Himalaya.
  • Its important tributaries are the Kali Gandak, the Mayangadi, the Bari and the Trishuli.
  • It flows into the Ganga at Hajipur in Bihar.
